PERSONALISED DEEP FAKE
There is no doubt that Deep Fake technology is becoming more and more advanced by the day. But in the last couple of years, “do-it” yourself Deep Fake services have started becoming an affordable option for those who need to create a virtual version of themselves.
Founded in 2017 by a young team of computer science researchers from Stanford, UCL, Cambridge and TUM, Synthesia’s mission “is to power the video-first internet: replace cameras with code & make everyone a creator”, according to the companies website. Technology of this nature allows the user to explore a plethora of business development related options as well.
Imagine writing a script and having an AI generated version of yourself, your colleagues, employees or an already made Synthesia avatar conducting virtual presentations or meetings in many different languages (Synthesia has more than 40 alternative language options) instead of doing it all yourself?
Synthesia’s technology opens that option up to the everyday person and businesses for an affordable price.
Security Concerns and Solutions
In June 2021, the Australian ABC’s Foreign Correspondent released a short documentary detailing the increasing national security and corporate risks associated with Deep Fake technology. During the short film, software engineer Matt Ferraro said “The Deep fakes are a fundamental threat to democracy and to any civilisation that relies on the truth.”
He went on to add “Deep fakes could very well undermine our sense of reality,” pointing to the recently released RepresentUs satirical Deep Fake series showing infamous dictators such as Vladimir Putin and Kim Jong-Un speaking about the fragility of democracy.
In response to the recent surge in Deep Fake videos across the internet, organisations such as Truepic have begun efforts to make AI generated disinformation more difficult to be taken as truth through the use of “provenance-based media authentication”.
Truepic aims “to accelerate business, foster a healthy civil society, and push back against disinformation. We do this by bolstering the value of authentic photos and videos while leading the fight against deceptive ones,” according to the companies website.
